top 5 desert island albums, 1st draft

If one was unfortunate enough to be stranded on some desert island, but fortunate enough to just happen to have 5 of some of your most cherished albums … what would those be?   I had not pre-mediated on this list.  I can’t recall which song it was off Siamese Dream that peeked its head through my 1000-track playlist, but it reminded me of an old thought, “this would be one of my ‘top 5 desert island albums’”.  That’s the inspiration here.  So, after a quick 15 minute brainstorm, I came up with:

  • Modest Mouse – Building Nothing out of Something
  • Radiohead – OK computer
  • Beatles – Rubber Soul
  • Smashing Pumpkins – Siamese Dream
  • Lupe Fiasco – Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album

This is not an affair of ranking albums.  This is a list of 5 albums you think you’ll be able to not only enjoy, but tolerate longer and enjoy indefinitely.  Already, I’m thinking I need Leonard Cohen – New Skin For The Old Ceremony… and one of Beethoven’s Symphonies.   For the Beatles, I would say “The White Album” because it’s not only fantastic with many of my favorite tracks, but the longest, but I’m setting down the rule that it’d have to be only 1 of the 2 discs/records/tapes.

Once I feel more final about the list, I plan to embark on an experiment where I only play those 5 albums for 1 week.  FSM help my family and office mate!  Clearly if I’m at a restaurant I will hear other music, so it’s not a completely controlled experiment, but it’ll be some kind of experiment!

top5-contenders

Now that I have a draft list, and knowing I need to drop 1 or 2 or 3 albums, or replace one with the other.. The Bends?  White Album (disc 1)?  Some other hip-hop album?  I also just noticed I have no electronic music.  No jazz either.  Funeral?  Bob Marley?  Sound of Silver?  Big Chill soundtrack?  Are soundtracks cheating?

I’ll sort it out, and I’ll let you know.  I’ll also provide some explanations on why certain albums are being considered, and if I have the time, discuss contenders who were cut and why they almost made it, but didn’t.
